Laser safety is important in all aspects of patient care and setting office protocols. It is recommended that every dental office appoint a laser safety officer. This course is designed as a quick learning reference for laser safety so that you can better understand the requirements. It is developed for the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD) members as an introduction and guide to preparing office policies and procedures on the safe use of lasers and laser systems in dental applications. These guidelines are designed to protect the health and safety of patients, team members, and the environment. This course provides a general overview of laser safety and describes what is important to include in an office safety protocol manual, what the role of a laser safety officer is, and how much further education is needed. The completion of the course will provide a basic overall understanding of the importance of laser safety in the dental office. This is a primer for any person working in the dental environment. No previous laser experience is necessary.
An appendix containing a glossary of terms is included in the course fee. It is recommended that course participants purchase the ANSI Z136.3-2018 American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care from the Laser Institute of America.
